This former Benedictine abbey was founded in 1063 by William the Conqueror, and it was in the church of Saint-Etienne that he was laid to rest in his tomb, in accordance with his wishes. After the French Revolution, the buildings became a secondary school and, during the bombardments, a refuge for civilians. In 1965, the town hall officially moved in.
